The second EIBC Tournament was played July 27th. Unfortunately Amy, Rose, Devin, Jonas, and Michael could not attend. The results were: Arun, 1st with 6 wins, Gianni, 2nd with 5 wins, and Brendan and Marc tied for third with 4 wins.

Dear Mark,

It was great to bump into you at the FCC last week and meet you in person as I had not registered who you were in all the excitement and fuss of the opening. On behalf of FEDA let me start by thanks you for the badminton sets you donated on the day. We have already managed to collect some table tennis tables, basketballs etc but were definitely missing badminton, and as you well know it’s a national part time so we should definitely include it in school activities!!

Secondly I was wanting to follow up the possibility of getting the CD of photos you took during the opening day. We would be happy to pick them up from you, or as you wish. It would be great to have them for our web site if you are willing as we are just developing a photo gallery facility now (www.fedacambodia.com).

Fading Summer Fridays in the Park

Dear EIBC Members:

After a break in play, many of us have expressed interest in regrouping, either at the park like we did for Mark's Farewell Party or at the normal EIBC venue, pending approval from Matthew. It is our goal to get at least a couple afternoons of play in before the dreaded daylight savings changeover.

Please let me know if this Friday, September 23rd, would be feasible for any and all. The following friday I personally will be out of town, but Jon Smith currently has the net and rackets, as we took them to Black Rock City, and would be happy to bring them...

You also might be interested to know that we did set up shop on The Playa and got some short, but quality play in.

I personally am looking forward to hearing Mark's stories from the Far East BC as well relishing my role in the EIBC as the new Blog Manager...thanks again for everything Mark...we will miss you!

Far East Islay BC

As many of you know, I am leaving on the MS Yellow Sea for Tokyo and the Far East. I will be taking my Pointforte raquet ("power without control is nothing") and a couple of birdies with the hope of finding competetors and friends as excellent as those I will be leaving behind. I am abdicating my responsibilities for the EIBC for the foreseeable future. I would hope that the fun and comraderie of the EIBC can be carried on. I nominate the following to assume the duties of the EIBC: Matt will be the grounds and equipment manager, Gianni should be in charge of sheduling matches, I would hope Amy could take on the updating of this blog, Brendan can remain in charge of the wine and birdies, Jon should assume control of the lost and found, and Arun will remain as head instructor.
I recommend another tournament before the weather turns soggy. I know a lot of people missed the last one because of other engagements and would love to play. I leave it in the hands of my successors to work it out.

The high point getter was Devin/Jonah with 166 ( a tally of all points scored that would have determined any ties).

The prizes:
The winner will have their name and the year enscribed on the EIBC Trophy, lovingly crafted by GIanni.
The winner also gets a DVD of "Queen Christina" .
2nd place recieves a DVD of the best downtempo mp3s in Mark's collection.
3rd place recieves a custom made audio CD.
Everyone will recieve EIBC iron-on transfers.
5th place recieves a "Guernica" key chain and a leopard print visor.

Badminton

Badminton is one of the few sports where men and women play together. It is a game for all ages and abilities, and although fitness is a key aspect for professional players, it is not a prerequisite for taking up the sport. It is a game that spans both the generation gap and gender issues, making it the ideal sport for families to play together. It can also be a wonderful way to meet new friends through local clubs and sports centres.

Rules of the Game

A few notes about the idiosyncrasies of the East Islay Badminton Club. We play according to rules of International Play but with a few tweakings to accomodate our circumstances.
*All games are played to 11 points, whereas in International Play men's singles and doubles are to 15 points, women's singles, doubles and mixed doubles are played to 11 points. The EIBC plays all games to 11 because we want as many people to participate in the amount of time we have to play. Average games last about 15 minutes.
*EIBC allows two service opportunities rather than only one in International Play because of the irregular wind patterns on the court and to accomodate the various skill levels of the players. Also, it gives the illusion of Wimbledon, if you close your eyes.
*Because the EIBC has as yet not hired any linespeople, referees, or umpires, we judge faults by the consensus method: if one player reasonably believes a fault has or has not occured, the point will be replayed. Karma will decide the outcome of the next serve. We can only rely on each players good judgement and self interest in not abusing this rule.
*In International Play a let serve must touch the net and land in play, EIBC rules state that any serve that touches the net is a let serve irregardless of whether it is in or out of play. This rule is also due to the wind factor and lack of clearly defined service lines.
*Games that go beyond 11 points must be won by two points but may not exceed 27. Games that reach 27 will be considered tie games and both players must retire to the showers and then to bed without any supper.
*Etiquette requires that players retrieving birdies must make a good faith effort to get said birdie to the player whose serve it is in the most elegant way. Apologies for errant tosses and thanks for well targeted ones are appreciated.
*The laws of the East Islay Badminton Club are governerned by the theory of neotrotskyiteanarchosyndicatalism. This means all rules are subject to review by all members and must be agreed to via consensus.

In preparation for the August tournament players will need to challenge each other to singles matches in order to be ranked for the doubles teams. The challenge matches will be best of three games, and must have an impartial observer present. Challenges may be made by posting on this site. At least two games with different players must be logged in order to qualify for the tournament. Each player in a challenge match will put in $5, the winner will be refunded this fee. The fees will go towards shuttlecocks, lawn replacement, and tournee prizes.
It is up to the players to decide who and when they want to play, rematches are allowed but all official challenges will be recorded for the rankings.
